Squamata Reptiles began one Spring morning in Kendall, FL; that's way down south, Dade County, in 1949- and I'm not giving away my age but I was 7 at the time. It was a day just like any other and I was doing the same as any other 7 year old would do, playing in the woods. There I discovered the beauty that Mother Nature has so generously given us all. I found a magnificent black, red and yellow banded snake. It was quite large- about 42" long. So, like all kids my age, I picked it up and managed to play with it and carry it in my pocket all day long. When I got home from my adventurous day, I showed my mother my prize only to have her grab her chest as she discovered I had spent the day nurturing a Coral snake! This snake however, started me on a life long study of this and all phases of reptile life that we share the planet with. Because of that day, I believe it is my job to speak for the one with no voice, legs or arms, that move so gracefully in our own back yards.
Squamata's purpose is to educate all who will listen, the important roll they and all animals play in balancing out this large check book we call nature, Eco System, food chain or just the Planet that we all occupy together.
Through education, we hope to protect all of the scaly ones as well as the Head of the food chain, Mankind. We try to teach proper identification, snake bite protocol, Do's and Dont's when we have that exciting experience that I was so fortunate to have had during my 7th year. We must learn to live with all of God's creatures, good or bad, big or small. Taking the time to learn and see what so many of us have been taught to fear. They are truly beautiful and fascinating. |
